TOO DEEP (FOR WORDS)

My intent with this sculpture is to celebrate and explore motherhood along with raising horses. The life-size mare and foal represent a relationship that transcends species and kind.  He is secure under her chin while he grows into those magnificent legs. She is nurturing and loving toward him providing protection and guidance.

The time under her chin is short lived. Over time their roles will reverse and he will have opportunity to nurture & protect her. Regardless of age and size he will always be her baby, though, and she will always hold a special place in his heart. If you doubt it consider this - what do brawny athletes choose to say when the video camera briefly turns to them? “Hi mom!” I believe they are also saying... “I know you are worried about me, like you always do, but mom - I’m okay.”

I can’t begin to pretend that at birth my relationship with Tyler, Marie, and Cody amounted to anything close to what went on between them and Jean and God as He knitted them carefully, skillfully, fearfully, and wonderfully together in the womb. I was pretty much a guest in the presence of a miracle during that initial mother & infant bonding.

The mare in this sculpture has a look as if to say... “if you have trouble in mind for my youngster don’t even think about it!” The maternal bond is probably the strongest earthly tie. She will defend him to the death with a love that is..........TOO DEEP (for words).
