PAPOOSE

This is my first life-size woman and child made of steel found objects.  Papoose was a special challenge as wrinkles and defects are easier to fashion than pristine beauty.  Since she was a speculative piece I had to anticipate all installation possibilities. With that in mind I constructed her with a concealable eye-bolt in the top of her head so I could pick her up with a crane and lift her over someone’s home if necessary. All of my large sculptures have installation features designed into them from the beginning.

Both mother and child have padlocks on their hearts. The baby’s is unlocked to represent the guileless faith of a child.  The mother also has an antique doorknob and plate at her sternum. Notice the knob is on the inside only.  God taps at the door of our heart but it is up to us to open it.

Look!  Here I (Jesus) stand at the door and knock.  If you hear me calling and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal as friends. I will invite everyone who is victorious to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat with my Father on his throne.
Revelation 3:20

He could break down the door but what kind of god would force you to love him?
Not the One I know.
